چکیده

Three-year forest above-ground biomass change is to be measured using L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) backscatter. Measurements are also made using P-band backscatter for comparison. The radar data were collected in the airborne BioSAR 2007 and BioSAR 2010 campaigns over the hemiboreal Remningstorp test site in southern Sweden. Regression models for biomass will be developed using reference biomass maps created using airborne laser scanning data and field measurements also collected in the campaigns. A previous study estimated biomass change using P-band data from the same campaigns, and reported root-mean-square errors of about 15% (corresponding to 20 t/ha). Errors for L-band based estimations are expected to be somewhat larger than P-band, due to weaker penetration of the signal into the forest canopy, and the dataset available presents a unique opportunity for thorough comparison of the capability to estimate forest biomass change between the two bands.

Decrease of L-band SAR backscatter with biomass of dense forests

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is one of the most promising remote sensors to map forest carbon. The unique spaceborne and longwavelength SAR data currently available are L-band data, but their relationship with forest biomass is still controversial, particularly for high biomass values. While many studies assume a complete loss of sensitivity above a saturation point, typically around 100 t.ha...

Sensitivity of L-Band SAR Backscatter to Aboveground Biomass of Global Forests

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter measurements are sensitive to forest aboveground biomass (AGB), and the observations from space can be used for mapping AGB globally. However, the radar sensitivity saturates at higher AGB values depending on the wavelength and geometry of radar measurements, and is influenced by the structure of the forest and environmental conditions. Here, we examin...

Remotely Sensed L-band Sar Data for Tropical Forest Biomass Estimation

HAMDAN O, KHALI AZIZ H & ABD RAHMAN K. 2011. Remotely sensed L-band SAR data for tropical forest biomass estimation. Several attempts have been made to obtain forest stand parameters such as stand volume, stand density, basal area, biomass and carbon (C) stocks from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. However the relationship between these parameters and radar backscatter has been a challengin...

The effects of changes in forest biomass on radar backscatter from tree canopies

We validated a canopy backscatter model for loblolly pine forest stands at the Duke Forest, North Carolina, by comparing the observed and modelled SAR backscatter from the stands. Given the SAR backscatter data calibration uncertainty, the model made good predictions of C-H H, C-HV, L-HH, L·HV, L-VV, P-HH, and P-HVbackscatter for most of 25 stands studied. The model overestimated C-VV backscatt...

L-Band SAR Backscatter Related to Forest Cover, Height and Aboveground Biomass at Multiple Spatial Scales across Denmark

Mapping forest aboveground biomass (AGB) using satellite data is an important task, particularly for reporting of carbon stocks and changes under climate change legislation. It is known that AGB can be mapped using synthetic aperture radar (SAR), but relationships between AGB and radar backscatter may be confounded by variations in biophysical forest structure (density, height or cover fraction...
